Behold the Breast Nest

In this day and time it is difficult to stay afloat what with all this economic disaster stuff and global meltdown, yet last week I occupied myself with a little project to escape the gloom. This is the "Breast Nest", an entry into "Bras for a Cause" at Penny's Closet in Mufreesboro. The contest goes a little like this; find any bra, decorate it in a theme, name it, turn it in, pay 25 dollars, and bam, you're in the running to win. The entire contest is to raise money for breast cancer research, which gets all of the proceeds in the end. Saturday is the day when I find out who won, and the top three entries will be auctioned off to raise even more money for the cause. Hope I win!

This isn't anything new, in fact, I painted these about a year ago. Yet I just realized that I haven't said anything about them at all! The bicycle shows were inspired by a tattoo I saw on a guy who had his favorite bike from when he was a kid permanently inked onto his feet, just like that. I was very impressed by the idea and even though I wouldn't get that myself (since I have no sentimental attachment to a bike so far) thats not to say that I wouldn't want to wear that design every other day!

To do this I sketched a basic frame onto the Keds, and then started painting with some acrylic fabric paint. First I used a tiny brush, and then made it even more tedious with a toothpick for those tiny spots- et voila! The bike shoes were born! Whenever I wear these on campus I get alot of odd looks, and sometimes people will actually ask about them. These have to be my favorite shoes, and I don't see them being replaced anytime soon!

The second pair are the bunny people shoes. These were inspired by an interesting picture I found in a mag a few years ago, and they get even more funny looks than the Keds! I painted them practically the same way, but used a different kind of paint, which worried me because it was alot thicker. Yet the outcome of the extremely long painting session was a sucess!

I hope to find more great shoes at the local thrift stores and

just go nuts on them, because they seem to get alot of

attention, and not to mention they are tres tres comfortable!

If The President Could Talk To God

After being subject to George W Bush's whims for the last eight years, I am very tired of this war. In fact, I am tired of everything that has to do with that man, but I will not bore you with the specifics. Since you probably already know what I would say, and possibly agree, here is a print I have been copying non-stop (that is until my stencil fell apart) and giving to anyone who appreciates it. This picture is not my origional design, but an Obey one, so as much as I would love to take credit for this, I cannot. Anywho, I had fun making this, and have even more fun handing it out.

Recycled Sailor and an Obey sundress

In the last few months I have been attempting to teach myself how to sew (so I dont have to learn when I finally get to take my textiles class) and these two dresses are the two things I have made this summer that I am really proud of. The first used to be a hideous sailor dress for children- it included a huge collar, bright pink bow, and poofy sleeves. Needless to say I got rid of those features and added my own, such as: the halter top and a great belt. In all the process took a few hours, since really all I had to do was shape the top. Since I didn't have to worry about altering the skirt, I took more time to handsew the top seams, and practice!

The second dress is one I know I will love for a long time! I got the pattern from Burdastyle.com and finished it in about a week. I accidentally bought less fabric than I needed, but I made it work et voila! This dress has the stencil detail at the bottom left hem of an Obey egg. I found the picture on some random website and made my own stencil of it- after much deliberation of whether or not to take fabric paint all over the dress I just slaved over, I am glad I decided to go through with it. The finished dress is so cute and I love to wear it!

The Twins

I have always been a fan of Miss Van (the french graffitti artist), but I will never be able to afford one of her prints, so voila!

This, by far, is the biggest thing I have ever painted, and took me about a month to complete. The birds were done by stencils, and could very well be my favorite part. Although I did not create the original print, I am extremely proud of this version and probably wouldn't sell it for anything (no, not even for gasoline).

Miss Bella's baby hat

Since my good friend had a child, I have been knitting like crazy for her! This hat is inspired by a pattern I found on Knitty.com and I knew from the moment I first discovered it that I had to make it for her. This version is made in with an acrylic yarn so that it can be thrown into the washing machine whenever (which im sure it will need). So far, little Bella doesn't like wearing hats, but I hope it will grow on her because she looks adorable in it!
